12 Real World Tips For Traveling With Kids

A black organizer with many fabric and mesh pockets, stuffed with baby supplies, is hung on the back of a car's front seat.

Where do parents get their best ideas? Often, from other parents!

That’s why we’re sharing a dozen clever travel tips provided parents in our online community. These ideas work for them…maybe they’ll work for you.

Be a “travel fairy”

Purchase small, inexpensive toys to use as rewards during long car trips. For each segment of good behavior, hand out a wrapped reward. Kids will be motivated to behave and will enjoy a new treat to keep them occupied for the next stretch.

Cultivate some zzzzs

Time road trips or flights to coincide with sleep time when possible. Travel time flies when kids can sleep through it.

 Prepare for snack attacks

Bring a cooler of snacks with you. It will not only keep kids happier, but cut down on food stops during car trips and snack costs in airports. (Check out our portable baby food storage containers.)

Turn travel time into family time

Kids (and parents) love classic travel games such as License Plate Bingo, I Spy, and Landmark Scavenger Hunt. Toss in a family singalong to boot.

Think beyond the storybook

Besides favorite books, bring along brochures of your destination for kids to browse through. They’ll love picking out activities to do when they arrive. Bring catalogs, too; kids love making birthday and holiday wish lists.

Make custom activity binders

Print out free online coloring pages, dot-to-dot activities, mazes, and even some fun school skill worksheets. Assemble them in a special binder for each child, then present to kids at the start of the trip.

Take an activity break

Pre-plan meal breaks around rest stops and parks, so kids can run around and burn some energy as well as eat.

Ask kids to help pack

Give each child a small storage bag to fill with toys and activities. This way, they’ll be sure to play with them along the way.

Consider mailing your luggage

Maneuvering through airports with kids and bags can get a little crazy. If you want to cut down the baggage, ship some items ahead of time. Or bring our extra-roomy kids gear bag (it neatly holds a booster and much more).

Pack essentials in a carry-on

When flying, bring at least one small, carry-on bag with everyone’s must-haves: a change of clothes, diapers, toothbrushes, etc. You never know if your flight will be delayed or if your baggage will arrive with you.

Bring something familiar along

Help kids transition to their home-away-from home by packing some familiar favorites: a stuffed animal, blanket, even a personal kids travel bed.

Discuss safety ground rules

Talk about safety behaviors before your trip. Explain what kids can expect at the airport, theme park, hotel, etc., and what you expect as well.
