Top 10 Travel Safety Tips For Parents

Two youngsters strapped in the back seat, with a traveling organizer between them for books, drinks, markers and more.

When it comes to family travel, our rule of thumb is: play it safe

Take these 10 basic steps to ensure your baby or child’s safety, and you’ll enjoy your outings and vacations that much more.

Have a sun protection plan

One serious childhood sunburn can increase a child’s risk of developing skin cancer later, so good sun protection is a must. Pack kids sunscreen, UPF clothing, and portable shade. Read our Simple Sun Protection Tips.

Pack kid-safe bug repellent

Insect bites aren’t just itchy, they can cause serious illness. Adult insect repellents may be too harsh for young skin, so pack kid-friendly insect repellent. If you’re traveling with baby gear, don’t forget mosquito netting for your stroller.

Bring a first aid kit

Be ready for anything: get a travel first aid kit with child-safe pain reliever, bandages, antibiotic ointment, tweezers, thermometer, etc.

Be germ savvy

You can’t destroy all the germs in the universe, but you can minimize your child’s exposure to them with disposable toy wipes, kids placemats and potty seat covers, not to mention frequent hand washing.

Keep kids close

Kids can wander off in the wink of an eye. Consider using a child safety harness, tether, or child locator system so you can’t be separated.

Wear bright colors

Visiting amusement parks or other crowded areas? Dress your child in bright clothing so he or she will stand out from the crowd. (If you also wear bright colors, you’ll be more visible to your child, too.)

Create an “if I get lost” plan

Tell your child in advance exactly what to do in the event you are separated. Bring his or her health history and ID information, including a recent photo. Better to have your child’s identification and not need it than need it and not have it!

Have a car seat/booster plan

If you’re flying, you can rent a car seat or booster in advance along with your car. Or for kids in belt-positioning boosters, consider our travel vest. It meets all U.S. car travel requirements, but fits in a suitcase.

Bring a portable confiner

There will be times when you’ll need to safely corral your baby or toddler for a few moments. Arrange for a play yard or bring our portable Go Pod along.

Don’t let down your guard

Safety never takes a vacation, but if you plan in advance, you can still relax and enjoy yourself while keeping your child safe.
